When the fire took our home, there was no question who to call. We lived in our home for 27 years. It sheltered us, kept us safe, and held our family’s memories. Losing it felt like losing a loved one. In the beginning, the thought of “replacing” our home felt impossible—almost like a betrayal.

Northfield Home

When the Palisades wildfire destroyed our home of nearly 40 years, we lost not only our house and vehicle, but also the tangible history of our lives together. Even in those first moments, though, we knew we would rebuild.

By February, we started sketching an idea: a round house inspired by medieval towers. Imagining that design shifted our perspective from grief to hope. When we met Roman and Christopher on Zoom, that spark became a flame. Christopher’s excitement about our idea gave us courage, and Roman’s thoughtful question about the meaning of a fortress-shaped home helped us realize how deeply we craved both beauty and protection. From that moment, we knew BSPK was the right partner for our journey.

INLAND HOME

When we lost our Malibu home in the fire, we were completely overwhelmed. We had never built a home before and suddenly found ourselves trying to juggle insurance, temporary housing, full-time jobs, caring for our daughter, and navigating an impossibly complex rebuild process. We were calling engineers, soil experts, expediters—without really knowing why. It felt like chaos.

That changed when our contractor introduced us to BSPK.

The next turning point came when we saw an early 3D model of our home. An East Coast couple approached us wanting to build a quintessential California dream home from scratch. To envision a design with the fewest limitations, they acquired the last unbuilt plot in Crestwood Hills, a pristine Los Angeles neighborhood that’s famous for its Quincy Jones–designed midcenturies. We took full advantage of the sloping site by imagining a two-level residence that nests into the hillside and mimics the function of a tree house. A spiral stair emulates a trunk by ascending from the sleeping areas below to the living areas above, where ample glazing wrapping the home’s expressive facade frames vignettes of treetops and the Santa Monica mountains in the distance. A statement-making flat roof canopies dramatically out over the site.

Residences in Santa Monica can feel closed off, but our clients, a worldly couple with three children, were interested in the opposite—a home that would engage with the neighborhood.

At the entrance of the modernist-inspired design is a water feature that doubles as a bench where passersby are invited to sit and converse. Similarly, an expansive wall-height window for the powder room at the front creates an open dialogue with the neighborhood.

Through the entry, visitors are greeted by a striking element envisioned by the client: a floating walnut stair that serves as a sculptural centerpiece as it ascends three levels through a lightwell. Further in on the ground floor are expansive dining, kitchen, and living areas, where pocket sliders melt away on three sides to connect with the backyard and pool, creating an expansive, free-flowing indoor/outdoor experience. Up the walnut stair are four bedrooms, including a primary suite that opens wide onto a wrap-around deck overlooking the yard.

Contrasting this limitless outward expression is a private sanctuary that provides our clients with a space for rest and refuge. The en suite bath is anchored by a generous 10-by-4-foot shower that’s hewn from a quartzite slab chosen for its visually stimulating character and calming effect. Its muted colors and striated, rippling patterns shift subtly as the sun moves across a skylight overhead, creating a dynamic yet soothing atmosphere.

To further reflect the owners’ vivacious spirit and penchant for hosting, we wove in a series of amenities including a state-of-the-art wine cellar, cinema room, and Turkish bath on the lower level. Additionally, a gym with mirrored walls keeps with the home’s open feel and the timeless elegance of International Style.
